  7. followers were drawn from the laity,
  8. including women, and clergy. Lay followers
  9. formed themselves into associations known as
  10. Brethren of the Common Life. Among its
  11. followers was Thomas a Kempis (c. 1380-1471),
  12. author of Imitatio Christi.
